Classic Outlook Crashes When You Accept a Shared Calendar? Try Microsoft’s Workaround

09/22/2026

Shared calendars help offices coordinate appointments, employee availability, conference rooms, and customer visits. When accepting one causes Outlook to close unexpectedly, however, a useful productivity tool quickly becomes a source of confusion.

Microsoft is investigating a known problem in classic Outlook for Windows. The issue can occur when someone accepts a shared-calendar invitation, particularly when the calendar owner granted permission to view all details.

Microsoft’s current workaround is to accept the invitation through new Outlook or Outlook on the web.

First, Make Sure It Is the Same Problem

A shared-calendar invitation is different from an ordinary meeting invitation.

A meeting invitation adds one appointment to your calendar. A shared-calendar invitation gives you ongoing access to another calendar, such as a manager’s schedule, a department calendar, or a shared office resource.

The known Microsoft issue is a likely match when:

  • You are using classic Outlook for Windows
  • Someone has shared an entire calendar with you
  • Outlook crashes immediately after you select Accept
  • Outlook otherwise opens and handles normal email
  • The problem happens again with the same sharing invitation

If Outlook is crashing during startup, while opening ordinary messages, or when using another feature, the cause may be different.

Use Microsoft’s Documented Workaround

Microsoft recommends accepting the shared calendar through new Outlook or Outlook on the web while it investigates the classic Outlook problem.

A practical process is:

  1. Close classic Outlook if it is unstable.
  2. Open your normal browser and sign in through your organization’s trusted Microsoft 365 portal.
  3. Open Outlook on the web.
  4. Locate the original shared-calendar notification.
  5. Select Accept from the web version.
  6. Confirm that the calendar appears.
  7. Reopen classic Outlook and allow time for the calendar to synchronize.

If your company already uses new Outlook, you can accept the invitation there instead.

Always use your normal company sign-in page or a trusted Microsoft 365 bookmark. Do not follow an unexpected calendar link from an unfamiliar sender.

Avoid Repeated Changes That Can Make Troubleshooting Harder

When Outlook crashes, it is tempting to reinstall Office, delete the user’s profile, remove calendars, or change permissions repeatedly. Those steps can create additional problems when the real issue is a known application bug with a documented workaround.

Before making larger changes:

  • Record which user shared the calendar
  • Confirm the permission level
  • Note whether the crash occurs only in classic Outlook
  • Try the web workaround once
  • Check whether another employee has the same problem
  • Tell your IT provider what changed immediately before the issue began

This information helps support staff distinguish a Microsoft problem from a damaged Outlook profile, incorrect permissions, an add-in conflict, or a broader Microsoft 365 service issue.

Keep Outlook and Windows Updated

Microsoft had not published a permanent fix for this specific issue at the time of writing on September 22, 2026. The company’s support page still lists the matter as under investigation.

Businesses should continue installing approved Microsoft 365 and Windows updates through their normal IT process. Updates frequently contain reliability and security fixes, but employees should not assume that an unrelated update has resolved this particular problem unless Microsoft changes the issue status.

In a managed environment, updates can be tested and scheduled instead of being left entirely to individual employees. That reduces the chance that every workstation ends up running a different version of Outlook.

Shared Calendars Need Consistent Management

Recurring calendar problems are often a sign that permissions, Outlook versions, or account setups have become inconsistent across the business.

A better long-term approach includes:

  • Using company-managed Microsoft 365 accounts
  • Assigning calendar access through a consistent process
  • Removing access when employees change roles
  • Keeping Office applications on supported versions
  • Documenting important shared and departmental calendars
  • Having one support contact who can review both permissions and devices

These practices make everyday calendar problems easier to solve and reduce the risk of sensitive appointment information being shared with the wrong account.

Cybernetic Networks can help businesses diagnose Outlook crashes, review shared-calendar permissions, and keep Microsoft 365 applications consistent across employee computers. When a scheduling problem starts interrupting the workday, responsive managed IT support can resolve the immediate issue while also reducing the chance that it keeps returning.
