Email, accounting, customer records, scheduling, document storage, banking, vendor portals, and Microsoft 365 may all run through a web browser.
When Chrome or Microsoft Edge becomes slow, freezes, or displays “not responding,” the interruption can feel like the entire computer has failed. Before replacing the machine, it helps to identify whether the problem is one webpage, the browser, the computer, or the business network.
Ask a few simple questions before changing settings:
If one website is slow for everyone, that website may be experiencing a problem. If every online service is slow for several employees, the office internet or network deserves attention. If only one browser on one computer is affected, tabs, extensions, updates, or the user profile are more likely causes.
Browsers often remain open for days and may be restored with the same large collection of tabs after every login.
Save any unfinished work, close the browser completely, and reopen it. If the browser or computer has not been restarted recently, restart Windows as well.
A restart can finish pending updates, release memory, and stop a background process that is no longer behaving correctly. It is a sensible first test, although it should not be the permanent solution to a problem that returns every day.
Each open tab can use part of the computer’s memory and processing capacity. Web-based accounting systems, video, dashboards, design tools, and document editors may use considerably more resources than a simple webpage.
Close tabs that are no longer needed. Bookmark pages that must be saved for later rather than keeping them active indefinitely.
Microsoft Edge includes sleeping tabs, which pause inactive pages and release resources for active work. Edge also has a performance view that can identify tabs using unusually high amounts of memory or processing power.
Chrome offers similar performance features, including Memory Saver. In a managed business environment, IT can configure these features consistently rather than asking each employee to find the settings independently.
Extensions add features such as password management, document signing, translation, coupon searching, screenshots, or meeting controls. They can also consume resources, change browser behavior, or gain access to information displayed on websites.
Open the browser’s extension list and review what is installed. Remove extensions that are unused, unfamiliar, or unrelated to work.
Do not remove a company password manager, security tool, or required line-of-business extension without checking with IT. In a managed environment, employees may not be able to change protected extensions, and that is usually intentional.
If the browser became slow shortly after a new extension was added, temporarily disabling that extension can be a useful test.
Browsers receive frequent security and reliability updates. An update may already be downloaded but waiting for the browser to restart.
In Edge, open Settings and more, select Help and feedback, and then choose About Microsoft Edge.
In Chrome, open the menu, select Help, and then choose About Google Chrome.
Allow the update to finish, save open work, and relaunch the browser. Businesses should also ensure Windows and device drivers are maintained through a controlled update process.
Clearing browser data is frequently recommended online, but it should not always be the first step.
Removing all cookies and site data can sign employees out of business systems, erase useful site preferences, and create extra login or multifactor-authentication work. It will not fix a weak Wi‑Fi connection, overloaded computer, failing storage drive, or slow third-party website.
If one website is behaving incorrectly, clearing data for that specific site may be more appropriate. Ask IT before clearing a browser profile used for important business applications.
Slow performance is usually a support issue, but certain symptoms deserve faster attention:
Stop entering business passwords if the browser appears to be redirecting or imitating a login page. Contact IT and describe exactly what appeared.
A slow browser can be a symptom of a larger issue. Escalate the problem when:
A support technician can compare browser, computer, and network performance rather than replacing equipment based on guesswork.
