A business website does not have to display an error message or suspicious page to have a security problem.
In October 2026, the PHP Security Team released emergency updates for two critical vulnerabilities known collectively as PHP2Shell. PHP is software used behind the scenes by many websites and online applications.
The vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, could allow an attacker to run unauthorized commands on a vulnerable web server. In plain language, a criminal may be able to take control of part of the system hosting the website without first signing in.
On October 26, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency added both vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog. That means organizations should treat the issue as an active risk, not merely a theoretical software weakness.
Many business owners do not manage PHP directly. It may be maintained by a hosting company, website developer, managed service provider, or cloud platform.
That does not make the issue irrelevant to the business. A compromised website could result in:
A website may continue loading normally while unauthorized activity is happening behind the scenes. Visual appearance alone is not proof that the site is secure.
Start by identifying who manages the server environment behind your website.
This may be:
Ask that provider whether your website uses PHP and who is responsible for installing PHP security updates. Avoid accepting a vague response such as “updates are automatic.” Request confirmation that the affected environment was reviewed after the October 21 security release.
Business owners do not need to diagnose the vulnerability themselves. Send the responsible provider a short list of direct questions:
Request a written response. Keeping that confirmation with your IT and vendor records makes future follow-up easier.
Installing updates is important, but an employee should not make unplanned server changes simply because the issue sounds urgent.
A PHP update can affect an older website, plugin, theme, integration, or custom application. The safer business process is to:
If a provider cannot apply the update immediately, ask what temporary protection is in place and when the permanent fix will be completed. Temporary controls should not become a reason to postpone the update indefinitely.
The main company website may not be the only affected system.
Businesses often have older web-based tools that are no longer top of mind, including:
An unused website can still create risk if it remains online. Ask your provider to inventory public-facing websites and retire systems that no longer have a business purpose.
This incident is also a reminder that website security is not a one-time project. A site needs supported software, reliable backups, controlled administrator access, monitoring, and a clear person responsible for updates.
Keep a simple record of the hosting company, website administrator, domain registrar, backup location, renewal dates, and emergency contacts. Make sure those accounts belong to the business rather than being tied only to a former employee or outside contractor.
