A backup can still exist and yet be temporarily unavailable when a business needs it.
That distinction became very real during the October 2026 ConnectWise Cloud Backup incident. ConnectWise reported unauthorized access involving application credentials associated with its Cloud Backup service, formerly known as SkyKick. The company disabled affected connections and began restoring services in controlled phases.
As of its published updates, ConnectWise said existing backup archives remained encrypted, isolated, and preserved, with no indication that those archives had been compromised. However, backup jobs, archive access, and restore capabilities experienced disruption during the response.
For small-business owners, the lesson is not that cloud backup is unreliable. The lesson is that a complete recovery plan must account for more than whether backup files exist.
It must also address whether those files can be reached and restored during a vendor outage or security investigation.
Email, calendars, contacts, OneDrive documents, and SharePoint files may all be essential to daily operations. Losing timely access can delay customer service, invoicing, scheduling, and project work.
A business may face several separate risks during a cloud-service incident:
Microsoft reported that the threat actor connected with this campaign attempted to sign in to more than 2,250 Microsoft 365 tenants. Microsoft also identified follow-on activity in multiple customer environments, demonstrating how a compromised third-party application can potentially use permissions that were already trusted.
That does not mean every ConnectWise customer was compromised. ConnectWise specifically advised that individual Microsoft 365 environments still needed to be reviewed separately.
A dashboard that says a backup service is configured is not enough. Someone should confirm the date and status of the most recent successful backup for each important system.
Pay particular attention to Microsoft 365 email, OneDrive, SharePoint, accounting data, customer records, and shared business files.
A successful backup report does not prove that recovery will work.
Schedule a controlled test using a small, non-sensitive file or mailbox item. Document how long the restore takes, who performs it, and whether the recovered information opens correctly.
Backup alerts should reach a person who will investigate them, not an unattended mailbox.
Your plan should also define what happens when several backup jobs fail in a row or a service becomes unavailable.
Cloud backup tools may use trusted application connections to read and protect Microsoft 365 data. Your IT provider should periodically review those connections, their permissions, and whether any old or unused applications remain authorized.
Business owners do not need to perform a technical investigation themselves. They should know who is responsible for the review and receive a clear summary of the result.
One provider should not be the only route to every critical record.
Depending on the business, an additional recovery option might include an isolated backup, protected exports of essential records, or a documented manual process that keeps key operations moving during a temporary outage.
CISA recommends maintaining protected backups and regularly testing their availability and integrity.
Decide which operations must continue first. For example, a medical office may prioritize schedules and patient communication, while a professional-services firm may prioritize email and active client files.
The plan should identify:
First, do not reconnect a suspended third-party application simply because a login screen becomes available. Follow the provider’s current instructions and have the responsible IT professional confirm that reconnection is appropriate.
Second, do not assume that cloud storage and cloud backup are the same thing. File synchronization is useful, but synchronized deletion, corruption, or ransomware damage can spread between devices and the cloud. A separate, managed backup provides another recovery layer.
The strongest backup plan combines monitoring, restricted access, multiple recovery options, and regular restore testing. It also assigns responsibility, so warning messages and service interruptions do not sit unnoticed.
