A Windows update usually sounds routine. However, an upcoming change could strengthen protection on many business computers while also revealing compatibility problems with older drivers or specialty equipment.
Microsoft says it will begin expanding memory integrity protection across eligible Windows devices in October 2026. Windows will evaluate each computer’s hardware, compatibility, and performance before automatically enabling the feature.
For most eligible PCs, the change should happen quietly. Small businesses should still understand what is changing and make sure critical equipment is ready.
Memory integrity is a security feature built into Windows. It helps prevent untrusted or altered software from gaining access to some of the most sensitive parts of the operating system.
In plain English, Windows creates a protected area that helps verify important software before allowing it to interact with the core of the computer. This makes it harder for certain advanced attacks to hide deeply inside Windows or tamper with the system.
Microsoft also calls this feature hypervisor-protected code integrity, or HVCI. Business owners do not need to remember that technical name. The important point is that it adds another layer between malicious software and the most privileged parts of a PC.
Many newer Windows 11 computers already ship with memory integrity enabled. Older PCs, upgraded devices, and computers with certain configurations may not have it turned on.
Beginning in October, Windows quality updates will enable memory integrity and its underlying virtualization-based security feature on more compatible devices. Microsoft says Windows will evaluate readiness first instead of enabling it indiscriminately.
This reflects a broader shift toward making stronger security the default rather than relying on every business or employee to configure it manually.
Malware that reaches the deepest parts of Windows can be difficult to detect and remove. It may interfere with security tools, capture sensitive information, or give an attacker lasting control over a computer.
Memory integrity cannot prevent every cyberattack. Businesses still need software updates, multifactor authentication, endpoint protection, backups, and staff awareness. However, it can make certain advanced attacks more difficult.

Start with computers connected to equipment your business cannot operate without. A problem on a general office laptop may be inconvenient. A problem on a checkout station, shipping computer, or clinical workstation could stop part of the business.

Old drivers are more likely to create compatibility problems. Install approved Windows updates and obtain hardware drivers from Windows Update or the equipment manufacturer.
Avoid downloading drivers from unfamiliar websites. Unofficial driver packages can introduce malware or cause additional instability.
Do not wait until the feature reaches every computer. Test representative devices, especially PCs connected to older printers, scanners, docks, or industry-specific equipment.
Confirm that the computer starts normally and that employees can print, scan, connect displays, and use essential applications.
Windows may display a message saying that a driver cannot load because of a security setting. That message does not automatically mean the computer is broken.
The best response is usually to identify the affected driver and look for a compatible update. Turning off memory integrity may restore the device, but it also removes a security layer. That decision should be made with IT support after weighing the operational need and security risk.
Updates should not arrive as a surprise on every workstation at once. A managed update process can test changes on a small group of computers, monitor results, and then expand deployment.
That is especially valuable for businesses using older hardware or software that cannot be replaced quickly.
Microsoft’s change should improve security for many Windows devices with little or no employee involvement. It does not eliminate the need to know which computers are protected, which devices are incompatible, or whether employees are turning off protections to make old equipment work.
