Many small businesses keep using a computer as long as it powers on, opens email, and runs the usual programs. That sounds practical, especially when budgets are tight.
But with Windows 10, there is an important difference between working and being supported.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs may still turn on, but they no longer receive the normal support, feature updates, and security fixes that business computers depend on.
End of support does not mean the computer immediately stops working. It means Microsoft is no longer treating that operating system as a fully supported business platform.
That can affect your company in several ways:
For a business, that can turn into downtime, employee frustration, risk, and surprise expenses.
Old computers usually fail at the worst time: during payroll, customer check-in, invoicing, tax work, busy season, or a staff deadline.
A slow or unsupported PC can cause:
For small offices, even one unreliable workstation can slow down the whole team.
If you are not sure whether your business still has Windows 10 computers, start with a simple inventory.
Check:
This should be done before a computer fails, not after.
Most businesses have three realistic options.
Upgrade eligible PCs to Windows 11.
If the computer is modern enough and in good condition, upgrading may be the simplest path.
Replace older PCs.
If the machine is slow, out of warranty, short on storage, or not Windows 11 compatible, replacement is often the better business decision.
Use Extended Security Updates only as a short bridge.
Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for some Windows 10 situations, but this should not be treated as a long-term replacement for planning. It helps reduce risk while transitioning, but it does not add new features or full normal support.
The best choice depends on the age of the PC, the software it runs, the employee’s job role, and the cost of repeated downtime.
A good Windows 10 transition plan does not need to be complicated.
Start with:
This turns a stressful emergency into a manageable project.
The biggest mistake is waiting until the old computer fails. By then, the business may be forced into a rushed purchase, a messy data transfer, or avoidable downtime.
