Microsoft support for Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 ends on October 13, 2026.
After that date, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook will not necessarily stop opening. Employees may still be able to create documents, send email, and use familiar templates.
The important change is what happens next: Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for those versions.
For a small business, software that appears to work can still become increasingly difficult to protect and support.
Do not assume every computer has the same edition. A business may have Microsoft 365 Apps on newer laptops and Office 2021 on older workstations.
On a Windows computer:
Microsoft 365 Apps is a subscription product that continues to receive updates while it remains properly licensed and supported. Office 2021 or Office LTSC 2021 is a one-time-purchase edition affected by the October 13 deadline.
Include Project 2021 and Visio 2021 in the inventory if your business uses them. Do not forget reception computers, spare laptops, conference-room devices, remote employees, or systems that are only used occasionally.
Finding Office 2021 does not mean an employee should immediately remove it.
A rushed replacement can interrupt:
Before changing the software, identify what the employee uses and test those workflows on a supported version.
Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for organizations ready to use its subscription-based applications and services.
Businesses that require a one-time-purchase, locally installed commercial edition can evaluate Office LTSC 2024. The correct option depends on licensing, connectivity, compliance needs, existing Microsoft 365 services, and the applications that must work with Office.
The decision should answer practical questions:
Buying another license without checking the surrounding environment may simply move the problem.
If several computers are affected, test one representative workstation before changing the entire office.
Choose a user whose normal workload covers the important functions, then verify:
Once the pilot is successful, schedule the remaining upgrades in manageable groups. Avoid changing every computer immediately before payroll, billing, a major customer deadline, or another busy operating period.
Confirm that important documents are stored in an approved, protected location before starting.
Employees should not move company files to personal cloud accounts or portable drives as a shortcut. A business backup should be deliberate, monitored, and recoverable.
Remember that replacing Office does not automatically create a backup of documents, email, templates, macros, or locally stored archives. Your IT provider should identify anything that requires separate protection.
A genuine support deadline can create opportunities for misleading advertisements and fraudulent update messages.
Employees should not:
Licenses and installers should come through Microsoft, an authorized provider, or the company’s established IT process.
Microsoft also lists October 13, 2026, as the end-of-update date for Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions. Enterprise and Education editions have a different servicing timeline.
While reviewing Office, ask IT to check the Windows edition and version on affected PCs. An Office upgrade does not solve an unsupported operating system, and replacing the application twice because the computer also needs attention wastes time.
End of support is easy to ignore because it does not look like a sudden outage. The software may behave normally on October 14.
The problem is that future security weaknesses and compatibility issues will no longer be corrected for Office 2021. Over time, that can make email, documents, add-ins, and business integrations harder to support reliably.
