Microsoft’s July 2026 security update cycle was unusually large. Krebs on Security reported that Microsoft released updates for at least 570 security flaws, including many critical issues and several zero-day vulnerabilities. You cannot manage updates well if you do not know which desktops, laptops, and servers are in use.

When should updates happen?
Many businesses prefer updates after hours or during slower times so staff are not interrupted.
Who checks for problems afterward?
Someone should confirm that key apps, printers, shared drives, and cloud tools still work.
What happens if an update causes trouble?
A backup and rollback plan matters, especially for critical systems.
Attackers often move quickly after security flaws become public. Once an update is released, criminals can study what changed and look for businesses that have not patched yet.
At the same time, rushed updates can create frustration if they restart computers during a client appointment, delay a proposal, or break a tool your staff relies on.
The goal is not to avoid updates. The goal is to make updates predictable.
Keep a current list of business devices, including laptops used remotely.
Set update windows that fit your schedule.
Do not let old computers fall months behind.
Restart computers regularly so updates can complete.
Back up important files before major system changes.
Pay attention to devices that are rarely used, because they may miss normal update cycles.
Ask your IT provider for update reports so you can see what is protected and what still needs attention.
Think of patching like maintaining an air conditioner, vehicle, or security system. It is much easier to handle in a planned routine than during an emergency.
As software companies use AI and other tools to find more security flaws faster, businesses should expect larger and more frequent update cycles. That does not have to be scary. It just means update management should be treated as a normal business process.
