Imagine setting up a new laptop for an employee and discovering that Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook either will not open or close almost immediately.
Email and online meetings can disappear from the workday at the same time. Employees may assume the new computer is defective, while managers may lose time reinstalling applications or resetting accounts.
Microsoft has acknowledged this problem on certain Windows PCs that use ARM-based processors. It is most likely to occur on new or recently reconfigured computers that have installed recent Windows security updates but have not yet received all available Microsoft Store updates.
ARM-based PCs use a different type of processor from the Intel and AMD processors traditionally found in most Windows computers. Newer devices such as the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 are examples.
Many business applications run normally on these computers. However, their software components and drivers may differ from those used by conventional PCs.
According to Microsoft, Teams and the new Outlook may fail to launch or may close unexpectedly on affected devices after Windows security updates released on or after August 11, 2026.
Classic Outlook, Word, Excel, and other applications are not currently identified as part of this specific issue.
Windows updates and Microsoft Store app updates are delivered through different systems.
A new PC can appear fully updated because Windows Update has completed while still missing a supporting package delivered through the Microsoft Store. That mismatch is why the problem is more likely on new or freshly prepared devices.
This is also why repeatedly reinstalling Teams or changing an employee’s Microsoft 365 password may not solve the problem. The account may be fine. A missing or outdated Windows component may be the real cause.
Determine whether both Teams and the new Outlook are affected. Note whether they fail to appear, briefly open and disappear, or show an error.
Also check Word or Excel. If those applications work normally, the behavior may match Microsoft’s documented issue.
Open Settings, select System, and then choose About. Look for the processor or system type.
A Snapdragon processor or an ARM-based system description indicates that the computer may be in the affected group. If you are unsure, send a screenshot of the device specifications to your IT provider.
Open the Microsoft Store, go to Downloads, and select Check for updates.
Allow all available application and component updates to install. Microsoft specifically identified an updated Auto Super Resolution Package, version 1.0.19.0 or later, as the mitigation for the documented launch problem.
Restart the computer after the updates finish, then test Teams and the new Outlook again.
If email or meetings are urgently needed, employees may be able to use the web versions of Outlook and Teams while IT reviews the computer.
Use the organization’s normal Microsoft 365 sign-in page or a trusted company bookmark. Do not follow links from unexpected messages claiming to provide an emergency Outlook or Teams fix.
Stop troubleshooting and contact support if:
IT can verify the Windows version, processor type, Store package versions, application health, and any management policies affecting updates.
Avoid removing recent security updates as a first response. Those updates may contain important protections unrelated to this application issue.
Employees should also avoid downloading unofficial repair tools, registry cleaners, replacement application packages, or drivers from third-party websites. These downloads can make the problem worse and may create a security risk.
A complete Windows reset should be a last resort, not an opening troubleshooting step.
This incident highlights an easy-to-miss gap in computer preparation. A device is not necessarily ready for work just because Windows Update says it is current.
A proper new-PC checklist should include:
Businesses should also keep an inventory showing which computers use ARM, Intel, or AMD processors. That information helps IT determine quickly whether a newly reported issue applies to the device.
When Teams and Outlook both stop working, the disruption feels much bigger than the underlying cause. In this case, checking Microsoft Store updates may restore access without reinstalling Windows or replacing the computer.
