SharePoint Server Attacks Are Active: What Small Businesses Should Check Now

SharePoint Is Not Just a Big Business Problem

Many small businesses use Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online without ever thinking about servers. But some companies still run SharePoint Server, which is the older on-premises version hosted on a company-controlled server.

That distinction matters right now.

In July 2026, CISA warned that attackers were actively exploiting multiple Microsoft SharePoint Server vulnerabilities. The Hacker News also reported that CISA added a newly patched SharePoint flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog after Microsoft confirmed exploitation in the wild.

For a business owner, the technical details are less important than the practical question: Do we have a SharePoint Server exposed to the internet, and is it fully patched and hardened?

Why This Matters to Small Businesses

SharePoint is often used for shared documents, internal forms, client files, HR records, project folders, and company knowledge. If attackers get into that system, they may be able to access sensitive files, create new accounts, move deeper into the network, or disrupt business operations.

This can affect:

  • Customer and vendor files
  • Employee records
  • Legal, accounting, or project documents
  • Internal procedures and passwords stored in the wrong place
  • Business continuity if shared files become unavailable

Even if your company does not knowingly use SharePoint Server, it is worth checking. Many businesses inherit old systems after years of vendor changes, office moves, mergers, or “temporary” servers that quietly became permanent.

The Plain-English Version of the Risk

A vulnerability is a weakness in software. When CISA says a vulnerability is being actively exploited, that means attackers are not just theorizing about it. They are using it against real systems.

For small businesses, that changes the urgency. This is not a “we should get to it sometime” situation if the server is exposed online.

The highest-risk setup is an on-premises SharePoint Server that can be reached from the internet and has not received the latest security updates. That kind of system should be reviewed quickly.

What Business Owners Should Ask Their IT Team

You do not need to know the technical commands. You do need clear answers.

Ask:

  • Do we use SharePoint Online, SharePoint Server, or both?
  • If we use SharePoint Server, is it exposed to the internet?
  • Were the July 2026 SharePoint security updates installed?
  • Has the server been checked for signs of compromise?
  • Are old SharePoint sites, accounts, and permissions still needed?
  • Do we have tested backups of SharePoint content?
  • Do we have a plan if shared files become unavailable?

If the answer is “we are not sure,” treat that as a reason to investigate, not a reason to relax.

Practical Next Steps

First, confirm whether your business has an on-premises SharePoint Server. Many small businesses now use cloud-based Microsoft 365 services, but older servers can still exist in the background.

Second, make sure any SharePoint Server is patched. Security updates only help when they are installed successfully and the system is restarted or completed properly.

Third, review access. Old employee accounts, vendor accounts, and broad permissions can turn a software flaw into a bigger business problem.

Fourth, verify backups. A backup that has never been tested is only a hope. Small businesses should know how quickly shared files can be restored if something goes wrong.

Finally, limit exposure. If a server does not need to be publicly reachable, it should not be sitting open on the internet.

The SharePoint warning is a good reminder that business technology does not stay safe by itself. Systems that store important files need regular patching, access reviews, monitoring, and backup checks.

Cybernetic Networks helps Orlando-area small businesses understand what systems they have, whether those systems are exposed, and what needs to be patched or cleaned up first. If your business is not sure whether SharePoint Server is part of your environment, we can help review it, secure it, and build a practical maintenance plan that keeps your team working with less risk.
