A familiar version of Microsoft Office is about to reach an important deadline.
Microsoft lists October 13, 2026, as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021, including the corresponding versions of Project and Visio. Its Office 2021 lifecycle page lists October 14 in Pacific Time for editions such as Home and Business and Professional.
The exact date depends on the edition, but the practical message is the same: businesses still using Office 2021 should review their computers now.
No. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and the other installed applications will not necessarily stop opening when support ends.
The more important change is what happens afterward. Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for affected versions. A problem discovered after the deadline may therefore remain unresolved.
Unsupported software can become a business risk even when it appears to work normally. Employees may encounter compatibility problems, unreliable add-ins, document issues, or security weaknesses that are no longer being corrected.
Office applications handle some of a company’s most important information: proposals, financial spreadsheets, customer records, contracts, presentations, and email.
Continuing to use an unsupported version can create several problems:
End of support does not automatically mean a breach or compliance failure. It does mean that the software is no longer receiving the normal protection and maintenance businesses should expect.
Do not assume that every computer has the same Office version. Businesses often accumulate different editions as employees and devices are added.
On most Office installations, open Word or Excel and select File, Account, and then About or Product Information. Look for names such as Office 2021, Office Professional 2021, or Office LTSC 2021.
An IT provider can also inventory the company’s computers centrally. This is usually faster and more reliable when a business has more than a few devices.
Remember to check Project and Visio, too. These applications may be installed only on computers used by managers, estimators, designers, or project teams.
Microsoft recommends moving Office LTSC 2021 users to Microsoft 365 Apps. Businesses that need a traditional, non-subscription commercial version can evaluate Office LTSC 2024.
The right choice depends on how the business works.
Microsoft 365 Apps can provide ongoing feature and security updates, but subscription costs, account management, internet access, and cloud policies should be considered. Office LTSC 2024 may suit certain specialized or offline environments, although it also has a defined support lifecycle.
Before choosing, review:
A license that looks inexpensive can become costly if it does not support an essential application or workflow.
Avoid upgrading every computer at once without testing.
Start with one or two representative computers. Confirm that email, printers, scanners, templates, add-ins, macros, and business applications continue to work. Resolve problems before expanding the upgrade.
A practical rollout should include:
If an immediate upgrade is impossible, document which systems remain affected, limit unnecessary exposure, and set a firm replacement schedule. Leaving the issue open-ended is not a long-term security plan.
A program can open normally and still be unsupported. That is what makes software lifecycle deadlines easy to ignore.
The goal is not to purchase new software simply because a date changed. It is to keep the applications employees depend on secure, compatible, and supportable.
